WWE has been reusing the names of their old pay-per-view events for NXT for quite some time. NXT specials such as Roadblock were once part of the main roster PPV schedule. It seems that the company is about to introduce a new show for their developmental brand.
According to Fightful, WWE filed to trademark “NXT Battleground” on March 20, 2023. The company submitted an application with the USPTO to trademark the new show for their white and gold brand.
Mark For: NXT BATTLEGROUND trademark registration is intended to cover the categories of entertainment services, namely, a show about professional wrestling; entertainment services, namely, the production and exhibition of professional wrestling events rendered through broadcast media including television and distributed via various platforms across multiple forms of transmission media; providing wrestling news and information through broadcast media including television and distributed via various platforms across multiple forms of transmission media; providing information in the fields of sports and entertainment through broadcast media including television and distributed via various platforms across multiple forms of transmission media; providing a website in the field of sports entertainment information.
WWE originally debuted the Battleground pay-per-view way back in 2013 as a replacement for Over The Limit. Following the re-introduction of the brand extension in 2017, Battleground became a SmackDown-exclusive PPV event.
Battleground was removed from the main roster premium live event schedule after WWE reduced the number of their yearly PPV shows in April 2018. The last-ever WWE Battleground event emanated from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
