Rey Mysterio got his bell rung this past Monday night.
As noted, the WWE Hall of Fame legend suffered a legitimate injury during his WWE United States Championship Invitational Finals showdown against fellow LWO member Santos Escobar on this past Friday night’s episode of WWE SmackDown.
While it appeared that Mysterio suffered the injury when the back of his head bashed off of the steel entrance ramp following the impact from Escobar’s suicide dive through the ropes, apparently that is not the case.
Dave Meltzer noted on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio at F4WOnline.com that the aforementioned spot was actually done to cover up the fact that Rey was injured a few moments prior, and was going to be unable to continue.
According to the longtime Wrestling Observer Newsletter editor, Mysterio was “knocked silly” before the suicide dive, as it was a Plancha from Escobar earlier in the bout that rung Rey’s bell. The subsequent suicide dive from Escobar to Mysterio on the floor was done to cover for the injury.
With the win in the WWE United States Championship Invitational, Santos Escobar will now advance to challenge Austin Theory for the WWE United States Championship on the August 11, 2023 episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown from the Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
There is no update as of this writing regarding the condition of Rey Mysterio. We will keep you posted here on the website as additional information surfaces.
